Late Heroics Lift Women's Soccer Past Maine, 2-1, In OT
September 03, 2017 | Women's Soccer
Doster ties match in 81st minute, Anastasio nets Golden Goal in 92nd.
SACO, Maine - Some late heroics after playing in a mostly driving rain lifted the UMass women's soccer team over Maine, 2-1, in overtime at Thornton Academy on Sunday night. Salma Anastasio scored the Golden Goal just two minutes into the extra time after Erin Doster found a game-tying goal in the 81st minute to force overtime.
The win is the first of the year for the Minutewomen (1-3-0) while Maine fell to 1-3-0. The Minutewomen will return home on Friday, Sept. 8 to host Delaware - the start of a six match home stand spanning the bulk of September.
The Black Bears held a 1-0 lead for the bulk of regulation after scoring just 52 seconds into play. Doster turned in a spectacular individual effort late in the match to dribble around the defense before hitting a strike that found home in the top left of the goal. Neither team was able to capitalize in the final minutes of regulation forcing the overtime session.
Anastasio's game-winning goal came after collecting a rebounded save following a Hrefna Petursdottir shot just under two minutes into the overtime session. The senior chested down the loose ball in traffic before firing a shot that glanced off Maine keeper Annalena Kriebisch to send the Minutewomen home with the win.
Maine carried the bulk of play in the first half, but UMass forced the action following the intermission. Overall, the Minutewomen held a 13-to-10 advantage in shots while corner kicks were even at three each.
Cassidy Babin made five saves for UMass as did Kriebisch for the Black Bears.
