Erin Doster, Sini Laaksonen tally goals for Minutewomen.
AMHERST, Mass. - A quick pair of first half goals proved the difference maker as Fordham handed the UMass women's soccer team a 3-2 loss on Sunday afternoon at Rudd Field. The Rams tallied goals just over five minutes apart, in the 22nd and 27th minutes, before adding their third early in the second half to pick up the road win.
UMass (4-5-1, 1-1-0 A-10) received the match's first goal from Erin Doster giving her a team-high four for the season. Sini Laaksonen converted a penalty kick in the 88th minute as well.
Doster opened the scoring after redirecting a cross from Sarah Beaulieu in the 20th minute of play. The Rams equalized just under two minutes later on a shot from distance by Clara Gastaldi. In the 27th minute, Lane Cronin headed home a shot inside the back post after a nice cross by Morgan Busacca from the right flank. Fordham (5-3-3, 2-0-0 A-10) carried the 2-1 lead into the halftime intermission.
In the second half, the Rams' Amanda Miller won a 50-50 ball before hitting a heavy strike from 10 yards out to make the score 3-1 in the 59th minute.
UMass continued to press in the balance of the second half before eventually earning a penalty kick in the 88th minute. Laaksonen sent her strike to the left center of goal to cut the Fordham lead to 3-2. The Minutewomen tried to build momentum into their offensive third twice in the final 90 seconds of play, but were unable to find an equalizer of their own.
The Rams held a 10-to-9 advantage in shots, while the Minutewomen earned the only two corner chances of the match.
Keeper Cassidy Babin made one save in goal for UMass, while her Fordham counterpart Kelly LaMorte made three.
The Minutewomen will play a pair of road matches next week heading to St. Bonaventure on Thursday, Sept. 28 (7 PM) and VCU on Sunday, Oct. 1 (2 PM).
