Captains Named For 2017-18 Women's Basketball Campaign

Hailey Leidel, Leah McDerment and Maggie Mulligan will lead Minutewomen in upcoming season.
AMHERST, Mass. - As the 2017-18 season draws closer, the UMass women's basketball team captains have been announced today by second-year head coach Tory Verdi. The Minutewomen will be led by the trio of seniors Leah McDerment and Maggie Mulligan alongside sophomore Hailey Leidel.
McDerment has been a three-year starter entering the upcoming campaign. The native of Stockport, England, has played in 90 career games with 81 starts. She started all 30 games last season and played a career-best 1,133 minutes.
Mulligan was one of the nation's most improved players last year and one of the NCAA leaders in double-doubles and rebounds. The Boston native averaged 13.9 points and 11.1 rebounds per game turning in her best year with the program.
Both McDerment and Mulligan served as team captains in 2016-17.
Joining the duo will be Leidel who was named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year last season after being one of the league's top scoring threats as a freshman. Nationally, her 15.5 points ranked second in the country among freshmen. The long-distance shooter tied the UMass single-season record with 78 made three-pointers which was the most in the A-10 last year as well.
The Minutewomen will hold a pair of exhibition games on Nov. 3 versus Kutztown and Nov. 6 versus Flagler College in the Mullins Center. The season-opener will be on Nov. 10 against Maine Fort-Kent at the Mullins Center as well.
