Women's Soccer Earns Big Win Over Yale, 1-0

Marra scores in 70th minute, Babin makes eight saves.
AMHERST, Mass. - Kelly Marra scored in the 70th minute and keeper Cassidy Babin made eight saves as the UMass women's soccer team defeated Yale, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon at Rudd Field. The Minutewomen (3-4-1 overall) have put together a strong run over the last five games with a 3-1-1 record in that span highlighted by today's win over the Bulldogs (6-2-1) who had just one loss entering the match.
UMass will open Atlantic 10 play this upcoming week when Davidson visits Rudd Field on Thursday, Sept. 21 (4 PM) and Sunday, Sept. 24, against Fordham (1 PM).
Sunday's match saw a defensive battle in the first 45 minutes with both teams heading into halftime knotted 0-0. Babin made six saves for the Minutewomen in the opening frame, while Alyssa Fagel made three for Yale.
After the break, Marra scored in the 70th minute to put UMass up 1-0 - her second collegiate goal with both standing as game-winners. After Jenny Hipp fired a hard strike from the right flank that was saved by Yale's Jane Buckley, who started the second half in net, the ball fell loose inside the six-yard box where Marra was there for the rebound goal.
Yale continued to pressure after the score but were called offsides three times and Babin made a pair of saves to preserve the clean sheet.
Overall, Yale had a 17-to-15 advantage in shots but placed just eight on target. The Bulldogs also held a slight 3-to-2 edge in corner kicks.
