Vandy Takes 3-1 Decision Over Women's Soccer

AMHERST, Mass. - A flurry of first half goals proved the difference maker on Sunday afternoon as visiting Vanderbilt took a 3-1 win over the UMass women's soccer team at Rudd Field. Erin Doster tallied the lone goal for the Minutewomen in the first minute of play, but the Commodores tacked on three straight before the intermission.
UMass fell to 0-3-0 on the year, while Vandy improved to 3-1-0 this season. The Minutewomen will return to action on Sept. 3 in a neutral site match against Maine.
Doster's goal came just 45 seconds into play as she tapped in a long cross from Salma Anastasio giving UMass a 1-0 lead. The pass landed just inside the far post where Doster was able to get enough steam on the low shot to get past Vandy keeper Kaitlyn Fahrner.
Just under three minutes later, Vanderbilt tied the match when Rebecca Rossett had a similar goal in traffic where she put home a rebound inside the six-yard box through traffic.
Nearly seven minutes later, the Commodores took a 2-1 lead when Simone Charley was able to evade a charging Cassidy Babin for the empty net score.
Grace Jackson closed out the scoring with a 24-yard arcing strike that tucked in the near-side post in the 43rd minute.
Vandy held a 20-to-10 shot advantage for the match and an 8-to-2 edge in corner kicks.
Babin made 10 saves for UMass, while Fahrner made five for the Commodores.
