CCSU Spoils Women's Soccer Home Opener 3-0

Blue Devils use two second half goals to put match out of reach.
AMHERST, Mass. - Jenna Rae Covello notched a pair of goals to lead Central Connecticut State to a 3-0 win over the UMass women's soccer team on Saturday afternoon in the season-opener at Rudd Field. The match was originally slated to be played Friday afternoon, but was postponed due to rain and forecasted lightning in the region.
The Minutewomen will return to action on Friday, August 25 against Stony Brook as part of a doubleheader with the men's team at Rudd Field. The match will begin at 1 PM with the men's team set to host its season-opener at 4 PM that day.
Covello opened Saturday's scoring in the 36th minute giving the Blue Devils a 1-0 lead that stood into halftime. She collected a loose rebound off a Danielle Pearse shot that deflected off UMass keeper Cassidy Babin's hands. Covello fired a hard line-drive into the far upper corner from the right flank for her first goal of the season.
CCSU made it a 2-0 lead in the 72nd minute when Pearse re-directed a cross with her body into the goal on a cross from the left flank off the foot of Shelbie Carr. Nearly 30 seconds later, the Blue Devils again received a bit of luck as a flat cross along the goalline by Covello snuck past Babin and deflected into the goal off the body of a UMass defender.
The Blue Devils finished the match with a 17-to-12 advantage in shots and a 6-to-5 edge in corner kicks. Babin finished the day making nine saves, while her CCSU counterpart Ashley Cavanaugh made five.
UMass' best chance came in the 79th minute when a shot in the goal box by Erin Doster deflected off several CCSU defenders before Cavanaugh knocked the ball out of bounds. Hrefna Petursdottir was able to connect a header on the ensuing corner kick, but the ball sailed high of the frame.
