Fast Start Leads Stony Brook Past Women's Soccer 2-0

Minutewomen fight back in second half but unable to crack defense.
AMHERST, Mass. - Despite a second half flurry, the UMass women's soccer team was unable to overcome a two-goal halftime deficit in a 2-0 loss to Stony Brook on Friday afternoon at Rudd Field. After the Seawolves held a 10-to-0 shot advantage in the first half, the Minutewomen flipped possession in the second half with 12 of the 13 total shots in the frame.
The loss drops UMass to 0-2-0 on the year while Stony Brook improved to 2-1-0. The Minutewomen return to Rudd Field on Sunday (Noon) to host Vanderbilt as part of a doubleheader with the men's team.
The Seawolves tacked on the first goal just seven minutes into play as Rachel Florenz capitalized on a turnover coming out of the UMass defensive third. She sent a strike on frame from outside the 18-yard box for the early 1-0.
Chelsea Deponte made it 2-0 just over 12 minutes later after evading a charging Cassidy Babin for the tap-in goal on an empty net.
UMass managed the first six shots of the second half and a pair of corner kicks but could not find the goal. The Minutewomen also had a pair of corner kick chances in the final four minutes of play but Gabriela Kenyon's header in the 86th minute went right and Kelly Marra's shot was saved by Stony Brook keeper Sofia Manner.
For the match, UMass held a 12-to-11 shot advantage for the match and a 6-to-4 edge in corner kicks.
Babin finished the day with three saves, while Manner made four.
