Women’s Lax Recognized with Four Major A-10 Honors

May 03, 2017 | Women's Lacrosse

A total of 10 Minutewomen honored by league with postseason honors.

PHILADELPHIA – Following its seventh consecutive unbeaten season in league play, the UMass women's lacrosse program was honored with four major Atlantic 10 Postseason Awards. Junior attack Holly Turner (Pittsford, N.Y.) was named the Offensive Player of the Year; senior midfielder Hannah Murphy (Duxbury, Mass.) was named the Midfielder of the Year; senior defender Sarah Crowley was honored as the Defensive Player of the Year; and head coach Angela McMahon was tabbed the Coach of the Year.

Turner earns her first honor as the league's Offensive Player of the Year and her second as a first-team selection. It also marks the eighth consecutive season that a UMass player has been tabbed the league's top offensive player. The junior is having a career-year with 74 points on 35 goals and 39 assists. The attack leads the A-10 in points and assists while ranking 23rd and 13th, respectively, in the NCAA.

Murphy earned her third consecutive honor as the league's Midfielder of the Year and as a member of the all-conference first team. The preseason All-American and candidate for the Tewaaraton Award currently ranks fifth all-time in NCAA history for draw controls (481). Her 171 draws this season is a UMass and Atlantic 10 record while also ranking as the fifth most for a single season in NCAA history. Her 50 points this season marks the third time in her career to eclipse that plateau.

Crowley was consistently one of the top defensive players in the league this season earning four weekly honors. She set a UMass single-season record with 43 caused turnovers which also led the Atlantic 10 and ranked eighth nationally. The senior was also one of UMass' top players in the draw circle ranking second on the team with a career-best 46.

McMahon was honored for the sixth time in seven years as the league's Coach of the Year. The all-time winningest coach in program history, McMahon has led the Minutewomen to unbeaten seasons in league play every year of her tenure – an NCAA record 54 straight games. In her seventh season at UMass, McMahon enters the 2017 postseason with a 125-17 overall record.

In addition to Turner, Murphy and Crowley, redshirt junior attack Hannah Burnett (Hungtingon, N.Y.) was selected to the All-Atlantic 10 First Team after leading the league with 54 goals during the regular-season. She was also honored as a member of the All-Academic Team.

Senior defenders Taylor Fischer (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) and Allison Ryan (Norwood, Mass.) were named to the All-Atlantic 10 Second Team.

The Minutewomen placed a trio of freshmen on the All-Rookie Team as well: attack Kaitlyn Cerasi (Wantagh, N.Y.), midfielder Stephanie Croke (Norwell, Mass.) and goalie Lauren Hiller (North Andover, Mass.). That marked the first time since 2011 that UMass has placed three players on the All-Rookie Team.

UMass will look to earn its ninth consecutive Atlantic 10 Championship title this weekend in Philadelphia. The Minutewomen will play the quarterfinal winner of Davidson/George Mason on Friday afternoon (1 p.m.) at Saint Joseph's University. The championship game will be Sunday afternoon. All games will be streamed online via the Atlantic 10 Digital Network for free.
