Women’s Lax Places Four on All-Region Teams

AMHERST, Mass. – Entering the NCAA Tournament First Round, four members of the UMass women's lacrosse team were honored on Friday with selection to IWLCA All-Northeast Region Teams.
The trio of Sarah Crowley, Hannah Murphy and Holly Turner were named to the first team, while Hannah Burnett was selected to the second team.
The Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association honored 128 student-athletes overall in Division I with selection to the All-Region teams for 2017. These student-athletes are now eligible for inclusion on the IWLCA All-American teams, which will be announced on Wednesday, May 17.
The IWLCA will honor the National All-Americans at the IWLCA All-American Banquet on Saturday June 3, 2017 at the Hunt Valley Inn in Hunt Valley, Md.
For Murphy, this is the third time she has been honored on the IWLCA All-Region First Team. She was tabbed a third-team All-American last year.
The Minutewomen's (16-3) first team honorees were all major award winners this year by the Atlantic 10. Crowley was named the league's Defensive Player of the Year, while Turner was the Offensive Player of the Year. For the third time in her career, Murphy was selected as the Midfielder of the Year and was named the A-10 Tournament MVP.
Turner and Burnett, who was an All-Atlantic 10 First Team selection, have been mainstays in the offensive attack. Turner leads the team with 80 points on 39 goals and 41 assists, while Burnett is just behind with 71 points thanks in part to a team-best 58 goals.
An All-America candidate and Tewaaraton Watch List selection, Murphy leads the midfield unit with 59 points on 44 goals and 15 assists. She is the nation's leading draw specialists with 198 on the season – the third most in NCAA history for a single season. She also ranks fourth all-time in career draw controls (508) need just two more to move into third.
Crowley anchors the defense and proved she can add an offensive touch after scoring the game-winning goal in the league's time game. She holds a UMass single-season record with 45 caused turnovers.
UMass will open the NCAA Tournament on Friday night (7 p.m.) against Colorado in Philadelphia. The winner will advance to the second round to face the winner of the Penn/Navy first round match up at Penn Park.
The University of Massachusetts and Gillette Stadium will host the NCAA Championship Weekend later in May.
