AMHERST, Mass. – As the United Women's Lacrosse league gears up for its second professional season, a trio of current and former UMass women's lacrosse players were selected in the 2017 Draft held on Monday, April 17 in New York City.
Senior All-American and Tewaaraton candidate Hannah Murphy was drafted by the Boston Storm, while alumni Kelsey Sheridan was selected to return to the Storm for her second season. Fellow alum and current UMass assistant coach Kelsey McGovern was also re-selected by the Philadelphia Force for her second professional season.
Year two of the first-ever women's lacrosse professional league will begin May 27.
Murphy is currently in the midst of her senior campaign with UMass as the Minutewomen seek their ninth consecutive Atlantic 10 Championship. The Duxbury, Mass., native is one of the all-time great draw specialists in NCAA history. Her 465 career draws is the sixth most in the sport's history and stands as the UMass record. She currently has 120 career goals and 41 assists along with 136 groundballs and 60 caused turnovers. A two-time Atlantic 10 Midfielder of the Year, she also earned IWLCA All-Region First-Team honors in 2015 and 2016.
As a player for UMass, McGovern was third-team IWLCA All-American and a two-time all-region selection. One of the top draw control specialists in program history, she finished her career with 201 draw controls highlighted by a then-single-season record 110 in 2013. She was a two-time All-Atlantic 10 First Team selection and a two-time A-10 All-Academic pick. In 76 games, she notched 10 goals, five assists, 76 groundballs and 59 caused turnovers.
Also a 2014 alum, Sheridan most recently earned a spot on the United States National Women's Lacrosse team last June. The defender became the ninth Minutewoman to earn a spot on either the U.S. National Team or the former Development/Elite squads.
As a senior in 2014, Sheridan earned IWLCA All-Region First Team, Atlantic 10 All-Conference First Team and Atlantic 10 All-Academic accolades. She was also named the MVP of the North/South Senior All-Star Game. She finished her career with 115 groundballs, 100 draw controls and 62 caused turnovers in 66 games. She now serves as an assistant coach at Atlantic 10 rival George Mason.
