Baseball Takes Game One at La Salle, 6-2

April 21, 2017 | Baseball

PHILADELPHIA – University of Massachusetts baseball won its second straight, taking game one of its Atlantic 10 series at La Salle, 6-2 on Friday afternoon. The victory moves the Minutemen to 4-6 in A-10 play and 10-21 overall, while the Explorers fall to 7-28 on the season and 1-9 in conference action.

UMass began the contest with a 1-0 lead courtesy of back-to-back one out doubles from freshman Nolan Kessinger and senior Dylan Morris in the top of the second.

La Salle managed to tie the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the third. Niko Jenkins led off with a single to center and crossed the plate on a one-out single up the middle by Austin Constantini.

The Minutemen pulled back in front for good in the top of the fifth. Sophomore Alec Norton began the two-out rally with a single through the left side and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Junior Brett Evangelista legged out an infield single to extend the inning and stole second to give UMass a pair of runners in scoring position. A balk brought in Norton for the go-ahead run and sophomore Ryan Lever plated Evangelista with an RBI single through the right side.

UMass added three more insurance runs in the eighth, sending nine batters to the plate. Sophomore Cooper Mrowka drove in Lever, who reached with a leadoff walk, dropping a single into right center. Kessinger was hit by a pitch and Morris reached on a fielder's choice, setting up a bases loaded walk to freshman Eddy Hart. Kessinger then came in on an error for the Minutemen's sixth and final run of the day.

The Explorers capped the scoring with a run in the bottom of the eighth with a sacrifice fly from Ben Faso.

Sophomore Justin Lasko went seven innings in his start en route to the win (2-4). He allowed just one run on five hits with one walk and a career high eight strikeouts. La Salle starter Michael Flax took the loss (1-3), surrendering three runs on seven hits with one walk and three stirkeouts over 4.2 innings.

Seven Minutemen combined for nine hits in the contest, including 2-for-4 performances at the plate by Lever and Morris.

The teams will return to action tomorrow, April 22, when the squads will square off in game two at 1 p.m. at Hank DeVincent Field.
