Baseball Splits Doubleheader at La Salle

PHILADELPHIA – University of Massachusetts baseball split its doubleheader at La Salle on Sunday afternoon, falling in game one, 4-3, before taking the finale, 3-0, to secure the series victory over the Explorers. Following the split, the Minutemen are now 11-22 overall, 5-7 in the Atlantic 10, while La Salle sits at 8-29 and 2-10 in conference action.
UMass opened the scoring in game two in its first turn at bat. Junior Brett Evangelista legged out a bunt single and moved to third on a single through the left side by sophomore Ryan Lever before crossing the plate on a double steal attempt.
The Minutemen later added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the eighth. Evangelista knocked a one-out single up the middle and went to second on a wild pitch before scoring on a ball overthrown at first when sophomore Cooper Mrowka reached with an infield hit. Lever walked and scored UMass' second run of the inning on an RBI single though the right side by redshirt sophomore Dylan Robinson with two away.
Senior Mike Geannelis threw a complete game shutout for the win (4-4), scattering five hits and walking just one while tying a career high with nine strikeouts. Luke Reilly took the loss (1-4) for La Salle, allowing one run on six hits with 10 strikeouts in seven innings of work.
In game one of the day, the Explorers began with a 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the first as Rafael Amanau drew a walk and later scored on an error.
UMass pulled in front, 2-1 in the top of the second after sophomore Alec Norton led off with a single to left and came home on an RBI groundout by junior Keith Linnane. Freshman Eddy Hart drew a one-out walk and came around to score following back-to-back singles by senior Dylan Morris and Robinson.
However, the Explorers took the runs back in the bottom half of the inning. Brian Tagoe followed Connor Hinchcliffe's leadoff single with an RBI double to right center and eventually came in on a sacrifice fly by Kevin McGowan.
The teams traded runs again in the third to complete the scoring. UMass tied things up at 3-3 on a ground ball off the bat of Norton only to have La Salle re-take the lead, 4-3, in the bottom half with another RBI double from Tagoe.
Sophomore Casey Aubin, who threw six innings of relief, took the loss (1-2), surrendering one run on three hits with one walk and seven strikeouts. Jorge Jimenez earned the win (2-3), pitching three scoreless innings of relief for the Explorers and limiting UMass to one hit with two walks and three strikeouts.
The Minutemen will be back in action on Wednesday, April 26, when the squad will play host to Quinnipiac at 3 p.m. on Earl Lorden Field.
