Baseball Topped by UConn, 11-3

STORRS, Conn. – University of Massachusetts baseball held an early 1-0 lead, but Connecticut scored the next 11 runs in the contest to top the Minutemen 11-3 at J.O. Christian Field on Tuesday afternoon. The loss leaves UMass at 8-21 on the season, while the Huskies move to 21-14 on the season.
 
UMass climbed out in front in the top of the second. Sophomore Cooper Mrowka drew a leadoff walk, was sacrificed over to second, went to third on an error and scored on an infield hit by senior Matt Bare.
 
However, UConn responded by tying the score at 1-1 in the bottom half of the inning. John Toppa singled to right, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and crossed the plate on a two-out single through the left side by Chris Winkel.
 
The Huskies then took the lead with a pair of RBI singles from Troy Stefanski and Isaac Feldstein in the bottom of the third.
 
UConn added a fourth run in the fifth on an RBI groundout by Feldstein before breaking the game open with seven runs on eight hits in the seventh.
 
UMass scored a pair in the top of the eighth. Sophomore Ryan Lever doubled in senior Jon Avallone who led off the inning with a single to left and crossed the plate on a two-out RBI single from Mrowka. Lever finished 2-for-4 on the plate in the contest, while Mrowka was 2-for-3 as the pair combined for four of the Minutemen's six hits on the afternoon.
 
Junior Kevin Hassett started on the mound for UMass and took the loss (2-3), allowing four runs on eight hits with four walks and three strikeouts over five innings. P.J. Poulin collected the win (1-0) for the Huskies, limiting the Minutemen to one run on three hits over five innings in his start with two walks and five strikeouts.
 
UMass will be back in action tomorrow, April 19, when the squad will face Northeastern in the Beanpot consolation game in Fenway Park at 3 p.m.
