Hockey Inks George Mika
April 14, 2017 | Hockey
AMHERST, Mass. – George Mika, a 5-11, 181-pound forward from Naples, Florida, has signed his National Letter of Intent to play for the University of Massachusetts hockey program, head Coach Greg Carvel announced on Friday. Mika joins forwards Mitchell Chaffee, Jake Gaudet, Phillip Lagunov, John Leonard, defensemen Mario Ferraro and Cale Makar and goaltender Matthew Murray as the eighth member of the Minutemen's Class of 2021. Prior to playing two-plus seasons with the Amarillo Bulls of the North American Hockey League (NAHL), Mika won a USPHL Premier Championship with the Boston Jr. Bruins in 2013-14.
"George is a very fast and offensively gifted player," said Carvel. "He led the NAHL in scoring until the last day of the season. He plays in the middle and plays with pace. George will add more speed and skill to our lineup as he transitions to the Division I level. He is a high character kid who also excels in the classroom."
Over 134 games in the NAHL, which included four contests with the Austin Bruins in 2014-15 and 130 with Amarillo (2015-17), Mika logged 116 points on 48 goals and 69 assists. In his final campaign with the Bulls, he finished second in the league in points with 69 in 60 games in 2016-17 and ranked third in goals with 30.
