Baseball Drops Series Finale at Elon, 5-1

March 05, 2017 | Baseball

ELON, N.C. – University of Massachusetts baseball dropped its series finale at Elon on Sunday afternoon, falling 5-1 to the Phoenix in the teams' third game of the weekend. Following the setback, the Minutemen are now 0-3 to start the season while Elon improves to 6-6.

UMass scored its only run of the day in the top of the first. Senior Jon Avallone led off the game with a double to left, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a one-out single up the middle by sophomore Ryan Lever.

Elon plated the tying run in the bottom of the third as Joe Satterfield reached with one away after being hit by a pitch and later came home on a sacrifice fly by Kyle Jackson.

The Phoenix took a 2-1 lead in the seventh. James Venuto led off with a single to left and was lifted for a pinch runner, Tyler Stanley. After advancing to third following an infield hit and a sacrifice, Stanley crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Ryne Ogren.

Elon went on to add three more insurance runs in the eighth on four hits, including a solo home run from Zach Evers and a two-out, two-run single by Jamal Clarke.

Senior Mike Geannelis surrendered just two runs on five hits over seven innings but took the loss (0-1) for UMass. He walked two and struck out a career-high nine batters. Reliever Sean Byrnes earned the win (1-0) for the Phoenix, working 1.1 innings of shutout relief, allowing one hit and walking one.

Avallone finished with two of the Minutemen's five hits in the contest, going 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored.

UMass will be back in action next Friday, March 10, when the squad will open the Delray Beach Invitational against Maine in Delray Beach, Florida at 10 a.m.
