Maine Rallies Past Baseball, 4-2

March 10, 2017 | Baseball

DELRAY BEACH, Fla. – University of Massachusetts baseball held Maine off the board for six innings, but the Black Bears scored four times in the bottom of the seventh and sent nine batters to the plate to rally pasts the Minutemen, 4-2 on Friday morning at Little Fenway at Miller Park. The setback leaves UMass at 0-4 on the year, while Maine improves to 6-6 on the season.

UMass took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth as senior Mike Geannelis drove in sophomore Ryan Lever with a single to center after Lever reached with a one-out, stand-up triple to right field.

The Minutemen later added their second run with two away in the seventh. Junior Brett Evangelista dropped a single into shallow center and senior Dylan Morris brought him home with an RBI double to the gap.

However, the Black Bears came from behind with four runs on four hits in the bottom half of the inning. A sacrifice bunt by Caleb Kerbs set up back-to-back one-out infield singles that tied the game at two. Jeremy Pena then put Maine in front with an RBI single through the left side and Lou Della Fera scored the Black Bears' final run on an errant throw to second on a double steal.

Sophomore Justin Lasko started on the mound for UMass and took the loss (0-1), surrendering four runs, three earned, on nine hits over 6.1 innings with two walks and five strikeouts. Justin Courtney picked up the win (2-1) for Maine, limiting the Minutemen to two runs on eight hits with two walks and seven strikeouts.

UMass finished the contest with eight hits, led by Lever's 2-for-4 effort with a triple and a run scored.

The teams will be back in action with game two of the weekend series tomorrow, March 11, at 1 p.m.
