Baseball Outlasts George Washington, 2-1

March 25, 2017 | Baseball

ARLINGTON, Va. – University of Massachusetts baseball used a solid start from freshman Brooks Knapek on the mound and clutch defensive plays to pick up a 2-1 win over George Washington on Saturday at Tucker Field in game two of the weekend series between the squads. With the victory, the Minutemen move to 5-9 overall and 1-1 in the Atlantic 10, while the Colonials fall to 10-12 and 1-1 in league action.

After two scoreless innings, UMass took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third. Junior Brett Evangelista led off with a single to left, was sacrificed over to second by sophomore Ryan Lever and scored following back-to-back singles by sophomore Cooper Mrowka and freshman Nolan Kessinger.

George Washington took the run back in the bottom half of the inning to pull level with the Minutemen. Eli Kashi was hit by a pitch to begin the inning and advanced to third following a walk and a bunt single before crossing the plate on a fielder's choice ground ball by Bobby Campbell.

UMass regained the lead in the top of the fourth. Senior Dylan Morris drew a leadoff walk, was sacrificed over to second and scored on an RBI single through the left side by Alec Norton.

The Colonials threatened in the late innings, but the Minutemen held them off, stranding 16 GW runners in total in the contest. With two runners aboard in the seventh, Morris snared a ball in the gap for the second out, robbing Nate Fassnacht of an RBI double. Then in the eighth with the potential tying run at third, Norton snagged a hard-hit line drive off the bat of Andrew Selby to preserve the lead.

Knapek limited George Washington to one run on seven hits with five walks and six strikeouts over seven innings en route to the win (2-1). Freshman Christian Rosati tossed the final two innings scoreless, allowing one hit with one walk and one strikeout to pick up his second save of the season. Colonials' starter Shane Sweeney took the loss (2-2), surrendering two runs on five hits with a walk and a strikeout in three innings of work.

Evangelista (2-for-5), Mrowka (2-for-4) and Norton (2-for-2) combined for six of UMass' nine hits on the afternoon. Kessinger and Norton logged the squads' RBIs.

The Minutemen and Colonials will play the rubber game of the weekend series tomorrow, March 26, at noon.
