Late Surge Lifts Baseball Over GW, 10-4

March 26, 2017 | Baseball

ARLINGTON, Va. – University of Massachusetts baseball used a six-run top of the ninth to help carry the squad to a series-clinching 10-4 win over George Washington on Sunday afternoon at Tucker Field. The victory moves the Minutemen to 6-9 overall and 2-1 in Atlantic 10 action, while the Colonials fall to 10-13 and 1-2 in conference play.

George Washington broke up a scoreless deadlock in the bottom of the fourth. Bobby Campbell led off with a double down the right field line and Nate Fassnacht drove him in with an RBI single.

Senior Dylan Morris legged out a bunt single for UMass' first base runner of the game in the top of the sixth, his 100th hit of his career. With one away, sophomore Alec Norton was hit by a pitch and senior Jon Avallone walked, setting up a sacrifice fly by junior Brett Evangelista. Sophomores Ryan Lever and Cooper Mrowka drew back-to-back walks to force in another run, giving the Minutemen the 2-1 lead.

An RBI single from Robbie Metz tied things up at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth, but UMass responded by taking the lead for good with two runs in the seventh.  A fielder's choice ground ball and a walk gave the Minutemen two base runners with one out, setting up an RBI single up the middle by Avallone. Norton then crossed the plate on an error for the Minutemen's fourth run of the day.

The Colonials closed the gap to one with a leadoff home run from Andrew Selby in the bottom of the seventh. However, UMass put the game out of reach with six runs on four hits in the top of the ninth for a seven-run cushion. Norton opened up the frame with a walk and scored on a single by Lever and freshman Nolan Kessinger drove in a pair with a single to right that extended his hitting streak to a squad-best 12 games. Kessinger and Lever came in on an error, while senior Matt Bare capped the inning with an RBI single to left.

Brandon Chapman added the final run for George Washington with a single to center in the bottom of the ninth that scored Cody Bryant.

Senior Mike Geannelis picked up the win (2-2) in his start for the Minutemen, working 6.1 innings and allowing three runs on 10 hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Reliever Eddie Muhl took the loss (1-2), surrendering three runs, one earned, on one hit and walking three in 2.1 innings.

UMass is scheduled to return to action on Tuesday, March 28, for the squad's home opener vs. Northeastern at 3 p.m. on Earl Lorden Field.
