Baseball Drops A-10 Opener at GW, 10-2

ARLINGTON, Va. – University of Massachusetts baseball, unable to battle back from an early deficit, dropped its Atlantic 10 opener at George Washington, 10-2, on Friday afternoon at Tucker Field. The loss leaves the Minutemen at 4-9 overall, while the Colonials improve to 10-11 on the season.
George Washington jumped out to a 5-0 advantage in the bottom of the first with the help of four straight singles to begin the inning. Cody Bryant drove in Joey Bartosic and Andrew Selby with a single up the middle following a double steal. With one away, Mark Osis tucked a single inside the left field line for two more runs. The Colonials' fifth run of the frame came in on an error on a pickoff attempt at first base.
Selby added to the GW lead with a two-run homer in the bottom of the second. The Colonials later scored a run in the fifth with on a two-out single by Nate Fassnacht and had two more runs come across in the sixth on balks with runners at third.
UMass broke up the shutout bid in the top of the seventh as freshman Nolan Kessinger doubled to lead off the inning and scored on a pinch hit single up the middle by junior Andrew Noonan. Kessinger drove in a run, as well, with an RBI single to center in the eighth.
Sophomore Justin Lasko started on the mound for the Minutemen and took the loss (1-2), allowing seven runs, five earned, on nine hits with no walks and one strikeout over two innings. Brady Renner collected the victory (2-3) for the Colonials, limiting the Minutemen to one run on seven hits over seven innings with one walk and one strikeout.
Kessinger finished the contest 3-for-4 with a double an RBI and a run scored to lead the UMass offense. Sophomore Ryan Lever went 2-for-5 at the plate with a double.
The teams will be back in action tomorrow, March 25, with game two of the series set for a 1 p.m. start.
