Rhode Island Comes Back to Defeat Women's Hoops 53-50

Rams use 10-to-3 run in final moments of game to seal win.
KINGSTON, R.I. – A fourth-quarter rally for the Rams led Rhode Island to a 53-50 win over the UMass women's basketball team on Wednesday night at the Ryan Center. Rhody used a 10-to-3 run to close out the final three minutes of play to pull out the home win.

RECORDS:
UMass falls to 9-20 overall and 3-13 in the Atlantic 10 while Rhode Island improved to 6-22 overall and 2-14 in league play.

UMASS LEADERS:
Maggie Mulligan led the Minutewomen with 14 points and 11 rebounds for her 20th double-double of the season. Hailey Leidel also had 14 points for UMass while adding five rounds and three assists.

URI LEADERS:
Charise Wilson led the Rams with a game-high 23 points with six assists. Nicole Jorgensen added 17 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double.

KEY MOMENTS:
• UMass ended the first quarter on an 11-to-4 run to finish the opening stanza with a 14-10 lead over the Rams. The Minutewomen held Rhody to just two field goals over the last 6:48 of the quarter.
• The second quarter saw UMass score nine straight points to take a 25-17 lead with 5:41 remaining. Jessica George sparked the run with a jumper and a three-pointer for five key points off the bench. The Rams closed the game with back-to-back field goals cutting UMass' lead to 27-24 at halftime.
• The Minutewomen quickly pushed the lead back to seven, 31-24, on back-to-back buckets by Holder and Leidel to start the quarter. The teams traded baskets through the quarter with UMass taking a 42-36 lead into the fourth.
• Rhode Island used a 10-to-3 run to end the fourth quarter. Back-to-back jumpers by Jorgensen first tied the game and then gave the Rams a 49-47 lead with 1:25 remaining. After URI went up by three with 26 seconds to go, Mulligan hit a lay-up while drawing a foul, but missed the ensuing free throw. Rhode Island was able to grab the rebound before getting fouled with 1.8 seconds to go with Wilson then hitting both free throws to seal the win.

UMass hit 18-of-53 field goals, but struggled at the free throw line hitting just 10-of-21 attempts. The Rams turned 18 UMass turnovers into 23 points and had 11 blocked shots on the night.

STAT OF THE NIGHT:
With three three-pointers, Hailey Leidel has 74 for the season which rank second-most for a season at UMass. Cerie Mosgrove's 78 in 2011 stands as the program record. Leidel also has 451 points which is just 19 shy of the top-10 list for a single-season at UMass.
