Women's Hoops Heads to Saint Louis for A-10 First Round

Minutewomen and Billikens set for Sunday tip at 3 p.m.
AMHERST, Mass. -Â Â After finishing the regular season as the No. 13 seed, the UMass women's basketball team will head to No. 2 seed Saint Louis for the opening round of the Atlantic 10 Tournament on Sunday at 3 p.m. The winners of the first round, campus-site games will then meet in Richmond, Va., for the quarterfinals through championship rounds of the conference tournament.
The game will be streamed online for free on the A-10 Digital Network, while 91.1 FM WMUA will broadcast the game locally in the Pioneer Valley.
UMass completed the regular season on Wednesday night suffering a 53-50 setback at Rhode Island as the Rams used a big run in the final moments of the game for the come-back win. The Minutewomen enter postseason play with a 9-20 overall record and were 3-13 in A-10 play during the regular season.
Maggie Mulligan led the charge against the Rams with 14 points and 11 rebounds for her 20th double-double of the year. Hailey Leidel added 14 points while also recording five rebounds and three assists.
Leidel has been the leading scorer for the Minutewomen all season long with 15.6 points per game and 5.9 rebounds. She is the top scoring rookie in the A-10 and the third-leading scorer overall. She also leads the league with 74 made three-pointers which is just five shy of setting a new single-season record at UMass. The Brownstown, Mich., native is the second-leading freshman scorer in the country and her 451 points this season is a freshman record for the Minutewomen.
Mulligan's 20 double-doubles ranks second in the nation as well. She is second on the team in scoring with 13.9 points per game to go with her 11.2 rebounds per game. The Boston native ranks 10th overall in scoring, is second in rebounding average, and fourth in blocked shots in the Atlantic 10. Nationally, Mulligan ranks sixth overall in rebounds per game.
Alyx Stiff rounds out the top scoring leaders for UMass with a career-best average of 10.1 points per game as a senior, while Leah McDerment's 5.1 assists is good for third among league leaders.
Saint Louis posted a 22-7 overall record and a 12-4 mark in league play which earned the Billikens the fourth-overall seed. Saint Louis fell in overtime to regular-season co-champion Dayton which earned a bye with the second seed.
Sadie Stipanovich is one of three Billikens to average double-figures with a team-best 14.7 points per game. She is followed closely by Jackie Kemph is scores 14.4 points a night. Jordyn Frantz rounds out the top three scorers with 12.2 points per game.
Saint Louis won the earlier match-up this season at UMass on Feb. 1, 81-60, led by Frantz and Jenny Vliet who each scored 16 points. Stipanovich had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Kemph also scored 14 points. Mulligan led all players with 22 points and 14 rebounds for UMass, while Leidel also had a double-double with 17 points, 11 rebounds.
