Saint Louis Knocks Women’s Hoops Out of A-10 Tournament

Mulligan scores 16 points, Leidel nets 14 points in season finale.
ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Saint Louis hit a barrage of three-pointers and scored 23 points off turnovers as the fourth-seeded Billikens knocked the 13th-seeded UMass women's basketball team out of the Atlantic 10 Tournament First Round, 91-51, on Sunday afternoon at Chaifetz Arena.
The Minutewomen end their season with a 9-21 overall record after going 3-13 in Atlantic 10 play. The Billikens advance to the A-10 Tournament Quarterfinals after improving to 23-7 on the year.
Maggie Mulligan led UMass with 16 points, eight rebounds and five blocks. Hailey Leidel also reached double figures with 14 points on four three-pointers. The freshman tied the program's single-season record for three-pointers in a season with 78 this year.
Saint Louis was led by 20 points from Jackie Kemph and 13 points from Kerri McMahan. Jenny Vliet added 11 points while Maddison Gits and Jordyn Frantz each scored 10 points.
The Billikens hit 12-of-23 three-point attempts in the game including a 6-for-6 effort in the second quarter which allowed Saint Louis to build out its lead over UMass. SLU also forced the Minutewomen into 19 turnovers which it turned into 23 points on the offensive side.
After a 16-10 first quarter, Saint Louis caught fire from beyond the arc in the second. That shooting effort translated into a 19-5 run before a Leidel three-pointer beat the buzzer for halftime. The Billikens went into the intermission leading 48-25.
The third quarter saw the two teams trade opening baskets, but Saint Louis used another big run to extend their lead. The Billikens used a 16-to-2 run to build out a 64-29 lead at the 4:26 mark.
Along with tying the single-season program record for three-pointers, Leidel's 37 minutes of game action gave her 1,144 for the year which is also a single-season record. The rookie set five freshmen records for UMass including the scoring mark with 465 points this year – just five short of the program's top-10 list for a single-season.
