UMass To Take On Fordham In A-10 Men’s Soccer Semifinals Tomorrow

No. 1-seed UMass will take on Fordham Friday at 4:30 after advancing to the semifinals for the first time since 2008.
AMHERST, Mass. –The top-seeded University of Massachusetts men's soccer will take on No. 5-seeded Fordham tomorrow in the semifinals of the A-10 Men's Soccer Championship at 4:30 p.m. at Baujan Field in Dayton, Ohio. The Minutemen (13-3-3 Overall) advanced to the semifinal round of the tournament for the first time since 2008 with a 1-0 win over Saint Louis on Sunday afternoon at Rudd Field.
UMass heads into the semifinal match having won five of their last six matches outright with their lone loss during the span coming against Fordham in the season finale at Rudd Field on Nov. 1. Alex DeSantis put the Minutemen ahead of the Rams early in their first meeting with a goal in the ninth-minute before Fordham scored three straight goals to grab a 3-1 advantage. Jack Fulton added a goal in the 73rd-minute on a free kick to pull UMass within one late in their only conference loss of the year.
The Minutemen are led offensively by A-10 Rookie of the Year and first-team honoree Davis Smith, the only freshman to earn first team honors in the league this season. Smith has a team-leading nine goals and 23 points while adding five assists. Alex DeSantis joined Smith on the first-team all-conference list after leading UMass in assists this season with six to go along with eight goals for 22 points.
Defensively, UMass has held their opponents under a goal per contest with a 0.96 average through 19 matches in 2017. Defender Brandon Merklin was named second-team all-conference on Wednesday while teammate Bardia Asefnia anchors UMass in goal with 60 saves and four solo shutouts.
