Minutewomen pick up huge road win as A-10 regular season winds down.
PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Erin Doster netted a pair of goals and the defense rallied to pitch a shutout as the UMass women's soccer team defeated Duquesne 2-0 on Sunday afternoon at Rooney Field. As the Atlantic 10 regular season winds down with the final weekend upcoming, the result keeps the Minutewomen's hopes of hosting a first-round tournament match-up alive after the win over the second-ranked team in the league.
UMass snapped a two-match losing skid to improve to 7-7-2 overall and 4-3-1 in league play, while the Dukes fell to 10-4-2 overall and 6-2-0 in A-10 action. Sunday's match was just the second time this season Duquesne suffered a loss at home (6-2-1).
Doster's efforts marked the first time in her career she had notched a pair of goals in a match. The junior now has a career-best and team-leading seven goals on the year and 10 for her career.
The Okemos, Mich., native opened the scoring in the 23rd minute after finishing a pass from Jenny Hipp and Sini Laaksonen. Nearly 12 minutes later, she tacked on her second goal of the day after Signe Schioldan set her up for the score.
From there, the defense took over with the 2-0 lead at the intermission. UMass keeper Cassidy Babin made three of her five saves in the second stanza to earn her fifth shutout of the season.
Overall in the match, Duquesne held a 10-to-7 edge in shots and a 10-to-1 advantage in corner kicks. Dukes keeper Kyra Murphy made one save on the day.
UMass will return to action next Thursday, Oct. 19 at Saint Louis (8 PM ET) before returning to Rudd Field to close the regular-season against Dayton. Prior to that match, the Minutewomen will honor their senior class starting at 1 PM.
The Atlantic 10 Tournament will feature a new format this season with the top four teams hosting first round games on their campus sites during the Oct. 28-29 weekend before the semifinals and championship rounds are played in Richmond, Va. at VCU's Sports Backers Stadium from Nov. 3-5.
