The Minutemen secured their first winning season since 2008 with a 2-0 win over La Salle on Saturday
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts men's soccer team secured their first winning season since 2008 with a 2-0 win over La Salle in a physical Atlantic 10 battle on Saturday afternoon at Rudd Field. The Minutemen (9-2-3 Overall, 3-0-1 A-10) extended their unbeaten streak to eight consecutive matches while remaining unbeaten on their home field with a record of 8-0-1.
The UMass attack struck first despite being outshot 3-2 by La Salle (5-8-1 Overall, 1-4-0 A-10) in the first half as Samuel Asamoah put one in the back of the net off the side of his foot to beat the keeper on a pass from Brandon Merklin in the 43rd-minute. Asamoah's goal gave him his third of the year while providing Merklin with his first assist.
Asamoah provided three shots for a Minutemen attack that attempted eight shots in the second half of the game, including a strike in the 69th-minute that sailed just wide right of the net after dribbling past a pair of Explorer defensemen.
Jack Fulton all but put the game away in the 84th-minute, scoring on a chip over the keeper from the edge of the box off an assist from Davis Smith for his second goal in as many games and his fourth on the year. Smith's assist gives him four on the year to go along with seven goals for a team-best 18 points.
Both teams kept the pressure on the defenses in the final moments of the match as the UMass defense held form in the final third of the field while defending four shots before Matthew Mooney had a go at goal with back-to-back shots that were kept out of the net by Mark Tobin.
Bardia Asefnia and the Minutemen defense picked up their fourth shutout of the year with Asefnia grabbing his third individual shutout performance with a save on the only La Salle shot on goal attempted on the day.
UMass will remain at home for a match-up against Rhode Island in a match featuring two of the top-three teams in the Atlantic 10 on Wednesday, Oct. 18 at 3 p.m. Admission is free.
