Freshman guard hits her second buzzer-beating game-winner of the season.

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Trailing by two with 6.5 seconds to go, freshman Hailey Leidel was able to hit a buzzer-beating three-pointer to give the UMass women's basketball team a 61-60 win at Davidson on Thursday afternoon at Belk Arena. The rookie scored a game-high 20 points and moved into the program's single-season top-10 for three-pointers made.

UMass improves to 8-10 overall and 2-3 in the Atlantic 10 with the win – its first on the road this season. Davidson falls to 2-14 overall and 0-4 in league play. The Minutewomen will return to action on Sunday, Jan. 15 when they host Duquesne at the Mullins Center (2 p.m.). The game will be televised nationally on the CBS Sports Network.

Leidel's 20 points came on a 6-of-16 shooting performance including five three-pointers. Maggie Mulligan posted her 14th double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Ryan Holder reached double figures with 13 points thanks to an 11-of-12 effort from the free throw line.

Davidson was led by 19 points from Justine Lyon and a double-double from Mackenzie Latt (14 points, 13 rebounds).

Despite hitting just 16-of-45 field goals, UMass was able to make up points at the charity stripe converting 23-of-26 free throws.

In the early goings, the Minutewomen received strong play from Leidel and Mulligan. Through the 7:27 mark of the second quarter, Leidel had knocked down three three-pointers as part of 11 early points, while Mulligan had eight points and four rebounds giving the Minutewomen a 19-14 lead.

UMass was able to build out a double-digit lead thanks to a 12-to-3 run in the second quarter capped by a Alyx Stiff three-pointer with 6:25 to go. That put the Minutewomen up 24-14 and forced a Davidson timeout.

The Wildcats were able to hold UMass to just one field goal for the balance of the second quarter, but the Minutewomen hit 11 straight free throws maintain its lead.

With 3:05 left in the second, UMass had to sit Mulligan after she picked up her third foul of the day. Despite having to play with the small line-up for the rest of the first half, UMass was able to keep hold of its lead.

Davidson's Lyon hit a long two from the far wing just before the buzzer cutting UMass' lead to 37-29 at the intermission.

With Mulligan still out to start the third quarter, Davidson was able to begin the second half with seven straight points pulling within a point, 37-36. Her return at the 6:34 mark sparked a six-point run for the Minutewomen to go up 43-36.

The Wildcats, however, closed the stanza with a 7-to-1 run with UMass holding a 44-43 lead going into the fourth quarter.

After UMass opened the fourth with five straight points, Davidson went on a 8-to-2 run to tie the game 51 each at the 5:22 mark.

She hit Leah McDerment on the outlet pass who took a pair of dribbles before hitting Leidel who banked home a 24-foot three-pointer at the buzzer for the win.
