Minutewomen and Dukes play pivotal A-10 match-up on national television.
AMHERST, Mass. - Coming off a thrilling win Thursday at Davidson thanks to a Hailey Leidel buzzer-beater, the UMass women's basketball team returns home to host Duquesne at the Mullins Center (12 p.m.). The match-up will be televised nationally on the CBS Sports Network.
Sunday will also be National Girls and Women in Sports Day with a pregame Q&A panel at the Champions Center along with a basketball clinic and autograph session following the game.
UMass enters the contest with an 8-10 overall record and a 2-3 mark in the A-10, while Duquesne is 9-9 overall and 2-3 in league play after a loss to Dayton on Tuesday.
Despite having a double-digit lead in the second half at Davidson, UMass found itself down by two with 6.5 seconds to go. Maggie Mulligan corraled a rebound off a missed free throw which led to Leidel's game-winner from 24-feet away - her second buzzer-beater of the year. Leidel finished the game with 20 points, while Mulligan had her 14th double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Leidel continues to lead UMass in scoring with 17.0 points per game, while also adding 5.2 rebounds. She is followed by Mulligan who is scoring at a 14.3 point clip and leading the Minutewomen with 11.9 rebounds. Freshman Ryan Holder is averaging 11.1 points a night, while Alyx Stiff has been strong offensively with a 9.1 point average.
In the Atlantic 10, Leidel is the league's top scoring rookie and ranks third overall. She also leads the league in three-pointers made with 52 which is tied for the 10th-most for a single-season in UMass history. Mulligan ranks eighth overall in scoring and is narrowly second in rebounds, while ranking third in blocked shots. Junior Leah McDerment ranks third in the A-10 for assists with 5.1 per game average.
Nationally, Leidel also continues to rank as the No. 2 scoring rookie in the NCAA just behind Nadine Soliman of UNC Greensboro. She also ranks 20th nationally in three-pointers made and is sixth in minutes played per game (38.0). Mulligan ranks fourth overall nationally in rebounding and is tied for first in the NCAA for double doubles (14) alongside Chantel Osahor of Washington.
Mulligan's 214 rebounds this year are closing in on the single-season top-10 list at UMass (needs 44 more for 10th), while her 11.9 average currently ranks third-best for a single season.
The Dukes are led by Chassidy Omogrosso who averages 14.3 points and Amadea Szamosi who scores 12 points a night. Szamosi also leads the squad in rebounding with 8.3 per game.
