Balanced Effort Leads Women's Hoops Past Duquesne 75-67

Minutewomen improve to 7-1 at Mullins Center for best home start since 2007-08.
AMHERST, Mass. - A 22-point effort from Hailey Leidel and a career-high 19 points from Alyx Stiff paced the UMass women's basketball team to a 75-67 win over Duquesne on Sunday afternoon at the Mullins Center. In front of a nationally televised crowd of 1,006 fans, the Minutewomen improved to 7-1 at home this year - its best home start to a season since 2007-08.
The win improved UMass to 9-10 overall and 3-3 in the Atlantic 10 with the Minutewomen having won three of their last four games. The Dukes fall to 9-10 overall and 2-3 in the league. UMass will return to action on Thursday, Jan. 19 at the Mullins Center against St. Bonaventure. The game will be Field Trip Day and features a special 11 a.m. opening tip.
Along with her 22 points on the strength of four three pointers, Leidel added eight rebounds and five steals. Stiff's career-best effort came in part to a 10-of-11 effort at the free throw line. Maggie Mulligan added her 15th double-double of the season with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Leah McDerment rounded out the top performers as she nearly pulled off a triple-double with 10 assists, eight rebounds and eight assists.
Duquesne was led by four players in double figures highlighted by 18 points from Cassidy Omogrosso. Julijana Vojinovic had 14 points followed by Conor Richardson who had 13 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Amadea Szamosi rounded out the top performers with 10 points and seven reounds.
UMass led 43-32 at the intermission after a fast start that saw Mulligan, Stiff and Leidel all in double figures. The Minutewomen shot 55.6 percent on 10-of-18 field goals in the first quarter setting the tone with a 28-17 lead after the first stanza.
The Minutewomen led by as many as 13 points in the third quarter, but the fourth saw the Dukes start to make a rally. Duquense scored eight straight points late to pull within 69-65 with 2:20 remaining. Four consecutive free throws from McDerment and Stiff extended the lead back to 73-65 with 54 seconds to go. After a Dukes basket, McDerment was able to seal the game with 39 seconds remaining as she hit another pair from the charity stripe. The defense forced a pair of missed jumpers on the ensuing Duquesne possesion with Mulligan grabbing the second rebound allowing UMass to run out the clock.
Free throws proved the difference maker once again as the Minutewomen converted 26-of-29 chances compared to 12-of-18 for the Dukes.
