Samuel Asamoah scores opening goal of match for Minutemen.

AMHERST, Massachusetts - After a scoreless first half, the second half saw a total of five goals scored as New Hampshire defeated the UMass men's soccer team 4-1 at Rudd Field on Tuesday afternoon. Sophomore Samuel Asamoah scored the opening goal of the match to break the deadlock before the Wildcats answered 35 seconds later and then took the lead for good 13 minutes later.

With the loss, UMass falls to 0-3-1 on the year, while New Hampshire improves to 4-0-0 overall. The Minutemen return to action this Saturday, Sept. 10 at Boston University. Kickoff at Nickerson Field is set for 7 p.m.

In Tuesday's action, the Minutemen pitched a first half shutout for the third time in the opening four matches despite being outshot 13-to-1 by the Wildcats.

After halftime, Asamoah made a nice run on goal where he was able to redirect a low, hard cross from junior Alex DeSantis giving UMass a 1-0 lead in the 48th minute. The lead was short-lived, however, as UNH answered 35 seconds later when Jackson Dickson scored to tie the game.

In the 61st minute, New Hampshire took a 2-1 lead when Chris Arling collected a loose ball after UMass goalkeeper Jorge Becerra lost possession after a collision just outside the six-yard box. Three minutes later, Alex Valencia pushed the lead to 3-1 when he crashed the near post to put home a loose rebound after Becerra was able to make an initial save on a Ben Gleditsch shot.

William Picoux closed out the scoring in the 70th minute giving UNH the final 4-1 lead.

The match was delayed for 25 minutes in the 77th minute due to an injured Wildcat. After play resumed, UMass managed a pair of shots, but was unable to find any goals in the final moments of play.
