September 26, 2016 | Hockey

Iacobellis becomes the 10th two-year captain in program history, while Baxandall, Trento and Wakaluk will serve as assistant captains.

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts hockey has elected captains for the upcoming 2016-17 campaign, head coach Greg Carvel announced on Monday. Senior forward Steven Iacobellis will wear the "C" for the Minutemen for a second season, while senior defenseman Brennan Baxandall, junior forward Dominic Trento and goaltender Alex Wakaluk will serve as the team's assistant captains.

"I am excited to begin my first year as head coach at UMass with a group of leaders for whom I have already earned great respect," said Carvel. "These four were chosen by their peers to lead them through a transitional period in the program's history. The character of the group is excellent and I am confident they will support me and my coaching staff as we look to take the program in a new direction. Steven Iacobellis is a proven leader and a rare two-time captain at the Division I level. His three assistants are great young men who live and lead their lives as we want all of our players to, on and off the ice. I am very happy for all four guys, because they are all deserving of wearing a letter and being distinguished for their leadership abilities."

Iacobellis becomes the 10th two-year captain in program history and fifth in the program's modern era. The Port Coquitlam, British Columbia native has appeared in 103 of a possible 106 games over his first three campaigns with the Minutemen, totaling 66 points on 23 goals and 43 assists. Iacobellis, who was second on the squad in assists with 17 in 2015-16, has ranked in the top-five in scoring for UMass in each of his first three seasons.

Baxandall has seen action in 55 games with the Minutemen and has logged seven points on two goals and five assists. The three-time Hockey East All-Academic Team member appeared in 14 games last season and contributed 23 blocks in addition to a goal and an assist.

Trento is coming off a 2015-16 campaign that saw him set career bests in virtually every statistical category, finishing tied for fourth on the team in goals (8) and sixth in points (17). The Brockport, New York, native, who was named the NCAA's No. 2 Star of the Week last Oct. 10, has 27 career points over 58 games on 13 goals and 14 assists.

Wakaluk is a two-time Hockey East Academic All-Star and three-time Hockey East All-Academic Team selection from Bellevue, Alberta. As a junior in 2015-16, the netminder logged a career high 439 minutes, 10 games played and 206 saves. He recorded his first career victory on Jan. 2, 2016, turning aside 22 shots in a 2-1 overtime win at Army West Point.
