Bulls net pair of penalty kick goals in second half to break open match

TAMPA, Florida – Evelyne Viens scored a pair of goals in the second half to lead No. 23 South Florida past the UMass women's soccer team on Sunday afternoon. The Bulls broke the scoreless deadlock in the 55th minute and then six minutes later added two more in a 93 second span to take command of the match. Two of the three goals came on penalty kicks.

The Minutewomen (1-2) will return to Rudd Field this upcoming Saturday, Sept. 3 to host Maine in the home opener. The match is slated for a 12:30 p.m. start as the first of a doubleheader with the men's team. Admission and parking are both free to all.

The first half saw both teams play an even match with the Minutewomen leading in shots 8-to-6 at the break. UMass carried much of the play in the first half, while holding the Bulls at bay defensively.

UMass had several quality scoring chances in the match. In the first half, Jenna Thomas hit the cross bar off a corner kick. Later in the match, Salma Anastasio managed to spin a defender before loosing a low hard shot that glanced off the post.

Trudi Carter scored the first penalty kick goal of the day at the 54:16 mark of the match after a yellow card was issued to UMass. The Minutewomen came back down the field looking to equalize with three corner kicks and a shot that was saved.

Nearly six minutes later, USF (4-0) broke open the match as Viens scored on an assist from Leticia Skeete putting the Bulls up 2-0. Just 93 seconds later, Viens scored again on a penalty kick giving USF a 3-0 lead in the 62nd minute.

South Florida finished the game with a 16-to-13 advantage in shots, while UMass held a slight 5-to-4 edge in corners.

Cassidy Babin made five saves in goal for the Minutewomen, while Kat Elliott made six saves in 75 minutes of work. USF lifted Elliott in favor of Haley Johnson for the final 15 minutes of play.
