Roush, Werenski, Sosnovich Impressive On A-10 Championship Day Two

GENEVA, Ohio - Emma Roush won the one-meter dive championship and Meriza Werenski broke the school record in the 200 individual medley as the UMass women's swimming and diving team finished day two of the Atlantic 10 Championships in fifth place at the SPIRE Institute on Thursday. UMass had fifth top-five finishes on the day helping the Minutewomen jump six spots from its opening day 11th-place start.
Following the day's competition, UMass has 131 points for the first two days. Richmond leads the championship with 231 points, while Davidson and Duquesne are second (177 points) and third (174 points) respectively. Fordham sits just ahead of UMass with 168 points for fourth.
Roush took gold in the one-meter dive with a score of 290.80 points. She was followed by Katie Polk's third place finish (247.65 points) and Julia Jagannath's nine place finish (249.80 points).
Werenski led a strong showing by the Minutewomen in the 200 individual medley when she placed third with a UMass record time of 2-minutes, 2.06 seconds. Jocelyn Yuen placed 12th overall (2:04.68), while Rebecca Quirie placed 14th (2:06.54). Earlier in the day, Quirie swam the third fastest time in UMass history with a time of 2:05.62 in the morning preliminary race.
Cassie Sosnovich turned in the second fastest time in school history with her 10th-place time of 23.49 seconds in 50 free. Kate Orr also moved up the all-time charts at UMass with her time of 4:49.07 which is the fourth-fastest mark in program history and earned her a 12th place finish.
The evening concluded with the 200 free relay team taking seventh with a time of 1-minute, 34.57 seconds. The squad of Sosnovich, Yuen, Hayley Masi, and Ansley Baker were just 0.40 second off the school record set last season.
Friday will bring day three of the championships beginning with preliminary races at 10 a.m. and finals events at 6:30 p.m. Saturday will be the fourth and final day of the meet.
