Werenski Wins 400 IM At Atlantic 10 Champs Day Three

GENEVA, Ohio - Meriza Werenski won the 400 individual medley and set a new UMass record for the event, while Rebecca Quirie added another school record in the 100 back as the women’s swimming and diving team moved up to fourth place at the Atlantic 10 Championships on Friday night at the SPIRE Institute.

After day three of competition, the Minutewomen now have 266 points sitting two points ahead of Fordham. Richmond continues to lead with 428 points, while Duquesne (322 points) and Davidson (319 points) are second and third, respectively.

Werenski’s winning time of 4-minutes, 16.39 seconds was also a NCAA ‘B’ qualifying time. Quirie placed fifth in the 100 back with her program record mark of 56.00 seconds.

Overall, the Minutewomen had nine performances among the program’s all-time top-10. Additionally, UMass had five swimmers place in the evening finals session.

Joining Werenski in the 400 IM were Jenna Diamond and Jenn Robeson who placed 10th and 11th, respectively. Diamond’s time of 4:23.52 stands as the second fastest performance in school history, while Robeson’s mark of 4:25.21 is the third fastest.

In the 100 butterfly, Cassie Sosnovich placed 4th touching in 55.14 seconds, while Jocelyn Yuen placed fifth (55.60 seconds). Rachel Grant rounded out the event with an 11th place finish.

Ansley Baker turned in the second fastest time in UMass history with her fifth-place finish in the 100 breast (1:03.36). She was joined by Sydney Conner who placed 12th and Mary Cohen who placed 16th. Connor posted a time of 1:04.60 in the preliminary race which stands as the third fastest mark, while Cohen’s time of 1:05.19 was the fifth fastest time in UMass history.

In the 100 back, Dasha Egkorova touched 10th in 56.24 seconds which stands as the third-fastest time in program history.

The evening concluded with the 400 medley relay team placing sixth with a time of 3:47.83 – just over two seconds behind the program record.

Saturday’s final day of competition will begin at 10 a.m. with preliminary races and conclude at 6:30 p.m. with the finals events.
