Garber, Nickerson Lovejoy Named to Western Mass Lacrosse Hall of Fame
November 08, 2016 | Women's Lacrosse
Duo to be enshrined in Western Mass Chapter of National Lacrosse Hall of Fame in January.
AMHERST, Mass. - Former UMass men's head coach Ted Garber and two-time All-American Cari Nickerson Lovejoy of the women's program will be inducted into the Western Massachusetts Chapter of the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame as announced by the organization.
The duo will be inducted on Jan. 11, 2017 in a ceremony held at the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass., as part of a four-member class. Joining Garber and Nickerson Lovejoy as part of the 2016 Hall of Fame Class will be Renzie Lamb and Jeff Coulson.
Garber, the son of legendary University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse former head coach Dick Garber, led the Minutemen as head coach of the program from 1991-94 during which UMass won 37 games and advanced to a pair of NCAA Tournaments in 1991 and 1993 while the squad won the New England Championship in 1993.
Garber has coached at every level of the game following a standout career at the University of New Hampshire. His professional experience dates back to the creation of MLL, where he was a head coach during the 2000 MLL Summer Showcase Tour. Garber was also head coach of the then-Bridgeport Barrage for the MLL's inaugural season in 2001. Garber's professional career also includes stints as an assistant coach in Boston, Chicago and Rochester.
Prior to joining the MLL, Garber coached at University of New Hampshire for 13 seasons and led the team to five Northeast Championships. He also guided UNH to its first NCAA Tournament appearance and was named New England Coach of the Year in 1986 while he was also the recipient of the Vincent Lobello New England Sportsmanship Award for Coaching.
In addition to his MLL and collegiate experience, Garber has spent more than 15 years coaching at the high school level, where he has won numerous Western New England titles and Founder's League Championships. In 2008, Garber reached a milestone and was recognized by U.S. Lacrosse for his 200th career victory.
One of the top offensive players in women's lacrosse history, Nickerson Lovejoy (1977-80) is the only player in program history to be named a two-time IWLCA All-America First Team selection.
In her career, she led UMass to the USWLA Semifinals in 1978, the USWLA Championship Game in 1979 and the AIAW Semifinals in 1980. During her four years, she helped lead UMass to a 58-7-6 overall record – one of the best four-year stretches in program history. That success set the foundation for UMass to win the 1982 NCAA National Championship - the first sponsored for women's lacrosse by the NCAA.
To date, Nickerson Lovejoy is the fourth leading point producer in UMass history with 219 points – she originally held the top mark for 30-plus years before Jackie Lyons broke it by seven points in 2011. Her record for career assists with 106 stood until Katie Ferris broke it in 2014. Her 113 goals still ranks among the top-10 coming in at 10th all-time. Her single-season mark of 34 assists was surpassed in 2012 after also standing for 30-plus years.
In 1979, Nickerson Lovejoy was named to the IWLCA All-America First Team and the USWLA All-Tournament Team. She repeated the All-America First Team honor as a senior in 1980.
Nickerson Lovejoy was inducted into the George "Trigger" Burke UMass Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 2012.
The Western Massachusetts Lacrosse Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2017 at the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass. The event begins with a social hour at 6 p.m. and the ceremony at 7 p.m.
