Midweek Tilt as Women's Hoops Heads to Hartford

Minutewomen enter week riding a three-game win streak.
AMHERST, Mass. - Riding a three-game win streak, the UMass women's basketball team will head to Hartford on Wednesday night for one of the Minutewomen's toughest tests of the year. The game is set for a 6 p.m. tip-off and will be streamed live on the America East Digital Network.
UMass (4-2) is coming off a 73-44 win over Merrimack on Sunday afternoon. Freshman Hailey Leidel scored a season-high 26 points to earn her second Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week honor this year. The Minutewomen had a pair of double-doubles in the game as Maggie Mulligan posted her A-10 best fifth of the season (15 pts, 15 reb) and Jessica George had the first of her career (10 pts, 10 reb).
Leidel retook the team lead for scoring this year at 17 points a game, while Mulligan is just behind at 16 points. Mulligan leads the Minutewomen in rebounding with 11.7 boards per game.
The duo rank among the top scorers in the Atlantic 10 with Leidel tied for third overall and Mulligan just behind at seventh. Leidel is the top-scoring rookie in the conference to open the season. Also among the league leaders in Leah McDerment who ranks fourth in assists with 5.2 per outing.
Overall as a team, UMass leads the A-10 in scoring defense allowing just 54.8 points. In last week's two wins, the Minutewomen held Central Connecticut to just 37 points and Merrimack to 44 points. Over the last three games, the defense has held opposing offenses to under 30 percent shooting from the floor.
Hartford enters the game with a 5-2 record after winning the Lehigh Christmas City Classic over Monmouth and Norfolk State last weekend. The Hawks are led in scoring by Deanna Mayza who averages 15.6 points per game. She is followed by Lindsey Abed (12.6) and Sierra DaCosta (11.9).
Overall, the Hawks average 68.1 points a game while allowing 65.7 to their opponents.
Following Wednesday's game, UMass will return to the Mullins Center to host Atlantic 10 foe George Mason on Sunday afternoon. The game will feature several promotions including Girl Scouts Day, National Cookie Day and a sunglasses give-a-way. The Minutewomen are 3-0 this year at home and are on a six-game home win streak dating back to last February.
