Sharp Shooting Leads Hartford Past Women’s Hoops 75-56

November 30, 2016 | Women's Basketball

Hawks hit 14 three pointers to snap Minutewomen’s three-game win streak.

WEST HARTFORD, CONN. – A sharp shooting performance from beyond the arc paced Hartford to a 75-56 win over the UMass women's basketball team on Wednesday night at Chase Arena. The loss snapped a three-game win streak for the Minutewomen who fall to 4-3 on the season.

UMass was led freshman guard Ryan Holder who scored a season-high 19 points and fellow freshman guard Hailey Leidel who added 17 points. Junior center Maggie Mulligan posted her sixth-consecutive double-double with 16 points and 17 rebounds while sophomore guard Jessica George added a career-best 13 rebounds.

The Hawks (6-2) were led by 15 points from Jess Camarada who was one of five players in double figures. Deanna Mayza and Sierra DaCosta each had 11 points, while Janelle Harrison and Kelly Douglass each had 10. Camarada hit a career-best five three-pointers to lead the Hawks shooting performance from beyond the arc.

The game opened with a fast-paced first quarter, but the Minutewomen fell behind 9-3 early hitting just one of their first 11 field goals. The Hawks took a 15-7 lead into the second quarter thanks in part to a three-pointer from Douglass with 47 second left in the stanza.

In the second quarter, Hartford hit four of three pointers as part of an 17-to-4 run in the first three minutes of play to take a 32-11 lead with 5:05 until halftime. A pair of Ryan Holder free throws followed by a Mulligan lay-up briefly stemmed the tide, but the Hawks hit three more threes to close out the quarter. Mayza's trey with 51 seconds left gave the Hawks a 43-17 lead going into the intermission.

The teams played an even third quarter, but UMass was unable to cut into the deficit. The Minutewomen hit 8-of-12 field goals including a pair of threes from Liedel, but the Hawks were able to match the production thanks to a trio of treys themselves.

A good start to the fourth quarter for the Minutewomen was stymied by back-to-back three pointers from Camarada giving the Hawks a 70-40 lead with 6:45 remaining. The sharp-shooting from Hartford, however, proved too much for any comeback attempt.

UMass finished the game hitting 18-of-56 from the floor, while the Hawks were 27-of-64 highlighted by hitting the 14 three pointers.

The Minutewomen will return to action on Sunday, Dec. 4 against George Mason in an early start to Atlantic 10 action. Tickets can be purchased by calling 866-UMASS-TIX, logging on to www.UMassAthletics.com and visiting the Mullins Center Box Office.
