Leidel Paces Women's Hoops in 73-44 Win Over Merrimack

Minutewomen win third straight behind freshman's 26 points.
AMHERST, Mass. - A season-high 26-point performance by freshman Hailey Leidel paved the way for the UMass women's basketball team in a 73-44 win over Merrimack on Sunday afternoon at the Mullins Center. The win marked the third straight for the Minutewomen who improve to 4-2 overall on the year.
Along with the 26 points, Leidel added eight rebounds and four assists. She shot 9-of-12 from the floor including a 4-of-6 effort from beyond the arc.
Overall, UMass had three players in double figures including double-double performances by Maggie Mulligan and Jessica George. Mulligan recorded her Atlantic 10 leading fifth of the season with 15 points and 15 rebounds. George had her first career double-double effort with 10 points and 10 rebounds - both career highs. Freshman Ryan Holder rounded out the scoring leaders with 13 points.
Merrimack (2-4) was led by Lindsay Werner who had a game-high 27 points on the strength of nine three-pointers. For the game, she was 9-of-16 beyond the arc and 9-of-18 overall from the floor. Savannah Johnson was the next high scorer for the Warriors with four points.
A strong day at the free throw line helped the Minutewomen who converted 15-of-16 at the charity stripe while Merrimack attempted, and hit, just two free throws for the game.
UMass led 29-19 at the intermission before a 16-to-2 run to start the third quarter opened up the game. Leidel scored seven points in the run, while George added five including three-pointers from both.
The Minutewomen will return to action on Wednesday, Nov. 30 at Hartford. Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m.
