Hawkeye Classic on Tap for Women's Hoops

Minutewomen head to Iowa to play in two-day tournament this weekend.
AMHERST, Mass. - Coming off a win over North Dakota State on Monday night, the UMass women's basketball team turns its attention next to the Hawkeye Classic hosted by Iowa this Saturday and Sunday. The Minutewomen (1-1) will take on host Iowa on Saturday afternoon before then facing either South Dakota State or Montana on Sunday.
In Monday's win, the hot-shooting Minutewomen were led by Hailey Leidel's 24 points and Maggie Mulligan's double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman guard Ryan Holder rounded out the top performances with 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the floor. Overall, UMass shot 45.8 percent from the floor and held a commanding 46-to-14 advantage in the paint.
In two games, Leidel is averaging 20 points to begin her collegiate debut which makes her the second-leading scorer in the Atlantic 10. Holder's 13.5 point per game average is good for 11th-best in the league so far. The freshman duo are the top scoring freshmen so far in the league. On the board's, Mulligan's eight rebound average ranks 8th overall in the A-10, while guard Leah McDerment's 5.5 assist average is fourth in the league.
Iowa enters the weekend with a 3-0 record after a 75-60 win over North Dakota on Wednesday night. Ally Disterhoft leads the way with a 21.7 point per game average followed by Megan Gustafson who is averaging 17.0 points.
South Dakota State (2-0) has a quartet of Jackrabbits averaging double-figures led by 15.5 points a night by Macy Miller and Kerri Young. Montana won its season-opener on Tuesday night with a 66-55 victory over Great Falls. Alycia Sims and McKenzie Johnston each scored 10 points in the game.
The Minutewomen will return to action following the trip with a home game on Wednesday, Nov. 23 against Central Connecticut State (2 p.m.) at the Mullins Center. Tickets are available by calling 866-UMASS-TIX, loggin on to www.UMassAthletics.com and by visiting the Mullins Center Box Office.
