Iowa Gets Past Women's Basketball 71-30

IOWA CITY, IOWA – Paced by 17 points from Alexa Kastanek, Iowa used a big first half to defeat the UMass women's basketball team 71-30 on Saturday morning at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in the opening game of the 2016 Hawkeye Challenge.
 
UMass (1-2) was led by a double-double of 11 points and 12 rebounds from Maggie Mulligan and 10 points from Leah McDerment.
 
In addition to Katanek's points, Iowa (4-0) had three others in double figures. Megan Gustafson had 13 points followed by Ally Disterhoft and Hannah Stewart who each had 10 points.
 
Overall, it was a tough shooting day for the Minutewomen who hit just 11-of-57 field goals. The Hawkeyes, conversely hit 29-of-62 and held a 48-to-33 rebounding edge limiting UMass' second-chance opportunities.
 
The Hawkeyes used a 15-to-1 run spanning just under six minutes to take a 26-7 lead after the first quarter. In the opening frame, Iowa hit 11-of-18 field goals including a trio of three pointers.
 
UMass' tough shooting day continued in the second quarter as the Minutewomen converted just one of 15 field goal attempts. The Hawkeyes slowed their shooting pace from the opening quarter and led 39-10 at halftime.
 
In the third quarter, McDerment scored six points and Megan Burke hit her first career three-pointer, but the Hawkeyes continued to push the ball in transition and hit a trio of three pointers to take a 60-22 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
 
The Minutewomen continued to fight in the fourth quarter ending the game on an 8-to-3 run capped by a Ryan Holder jumper with 23 seconds remaining.
 
UMass will play again on Sunday afternoon taking on either South Dakota State or Montana at 11:30 a.m. CT at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
