Swimming and Diving Opens Season at Colgate Invitational

Minutemen and Minutewomen begin 2016-17 campaign with two-day event.
AMHERST, Massachusetts - The 2016-17 season officially begins this Friday and Saturday, Oct. 7-8, as the UMass men's and women's swimming and diving teams head to the Colgate Invitational in Hamilton, N.Y.
The event will be a good baseline for both programs with a total of seven different schools competing at Lineberry Natatorium. In addition to UMass and Colgate, Cleveland State and Le Moyne College will have both their men's and women's teams at the Invitational, while Saint Francis, Lock Haven and Long Island will compete on the women's side.
The weekend will begin on Friday at 5 p.m. with the 200 free relay. The evening's events will also include the 500 free, 200 individual medley, the 50 free and the one-meter dive. Saturday's events will begin on Saturday at 10 a.m.
For the Minutewomen, the weekend will mark the first collegiate competition of eight newcomers. This year's senior class will be anchored by Meriza Werenski and diver Julia Jagannath. UMass finished the 2016 Atlantic 10 Championships in fourth place and were picked to finish fifth in this year's A-10 preseason poll.
On the men's side, the Minutemen were picked to repeat as Atlantic 10 Champions which would be UMass' 17th overall league title and third consecutive. UMass will see nine newcomers added to the roster and is led by a senior class of seven. Senior diver Robert Barry will lead was has traditionally be one of the best groups in the A-10, while Heath Maginn and Thomas Brennan anchor the swimmers.
The Minutemen and Minutewomen will open the home portion of the schedule next Friday, Oct. 14 in a dual meet with Army. The meet in Joseph R. Rogers Pool is set to begin at 5 p.m. The Minutemen will hold a special Senior Day ceremony for divers Barry and Nolan Burns as the duo will be competing at a diving invitational during the regularly scheduled Senior Day on January 14 against Bryant.
