November 02, 2016 | Men's Soccer
Ty Goncalves and Josh Jess score in second half to propel Minutemen to third straight win.
BRONX, N.Y. - A pair of second half goals and another strong defensive effort propelled the UMass men's soccer team into second-place in the Atlantic 10 standings after a 2-0 win at Fordham on Wednesday afternoon. The win also clinches the Minutemen a spot in the 2016 Atlantic 10 Tournament hosted next week at Davidson.
The Minutemen have one more match to play in the regular-season as they look to carry their momentum to La Salle on Saturday afternoon. The final field of eight will be announced following the day's action. The winner of the Atlantic 10 Tournament will receive an automatic berth to the NCAA Men's Soccer Tournament.
Wednesday's win improved UMass to 7-7-3 overall and 4-1-2 in the A-10, while previously second-ranked Fordham falls to 7-6-3 overall and 4-2-1 in league play. The win was UMass' third straight and the Minutemen have now posted a 7-2-2 in the last 11 matches. All seven of UMass' shutouts have come during that run.
After a scoreless first half, Ty Goncalves gave UMass a 1-0 lead in the 55th minute after a yellow card in the box to Rams keeper Rashid Nuhu gave the Minutemen a penalty kick. The score marked Goncalves team-best fourth of the season.
Just under six minutes later, in the 61st minute, Josh Jess then gave the Minutemen a 2-0 lead after heading home a Goncalves service on a corner kick. The goal was the fourth of the year as well for Jess to move him into a tie with his fellow co-captain. The three-point match gives Goncalves a career-best and team-leading 12 points this season. For Jess, three of his goals have come in the last four matches.
After both UMass goals, the Rams had chances to get on the scoreboard, but keeper Jorge Becerra made a pair of his three saves to preserve the lead. The Minutemen defense stood tall in the final 30 minutes of play allowing just one Fordham shot which sailed high of frame in the 82nd minute.
Nuhu made one save in goal and was aided by his defense with a pair of defenders credited for last-second saves as well in the match. Becerra's seventh shutout of the season moves him into a tie for fourth all-time on the single-season record list for UMass with All-American Zack Simmons (2008) and standout Bryan O'Quinn (2001, 2000).
