Saint Joseph's Takes 2-1 Win Over Women's Soccer

October 27, 2016 | Women's Soccer

Hawks win weather-shortened match that was called in 71st minute due to snow.

AMHERST, Mass. - In what was a must-win match for the UMass women's soccer team, it was mother nature that played a hand in pre-maturely ending any upset bid of league-leader Saint Joseph's on Thursday afternoon at a snowy Rudd Field. The Hawks took a 2-1 win over the Minutewomen after the match was ended in the 71st minute after a heavy snow shower impeded play for both sides. Because the contest reached the 71st minute, it is considered a full match.

The result dropped UMass to 3-10-3 overall and 1-6-2 in Atlantic 10 play. Despite having a three-match unbeaten streak entering Thursday, the Minutewomen needed to win today and on Sunday at Dayton to have a shot at the Atlantic 10 Tournament. The loss eliminates UMass from the A-10 postseason field.

Snow began accumulating prior to kickoff as the match began on schedule. The Hawks (15-1-2, 8-0-1 A-10) were able to test UMass early despite both sides getting used to the conditions.

Despite the early pressure, it was UMass that opened the scoring. Jackie Miller gave the Minutewomen a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute after slotting home a nice feed from Megan Burke and Erin Doster.

Ten minutes later, however, Saint Joseph's equalized when Dakota Mills spun on a defender to fire a low shot with her off foot that skidded past UMass keeper Cassidy Babin.

After going into halftime tied 1-1, the Hawks took a 2-1 lead in the 51st minute as Mills set-up Lauren Dimes for what proved the game-winning goal.

As the match wore on, the snow accumulation continued to increase on the field. With no sign of slowing down, the referees huddled once the clock reached the 71st minute to assess conditions. It was then decided that the heavy snow was having too much of an impact on play and the match was called complete.

On the day, SJU held a 14-to-6 advantage in shots while both teams earned two corner kicks.

Babin finished the match with eight saves while her counterpart Grace Bendon made one for the Hawks.
