Women's Soccer Season Concludes with 3-1 Loss at Dayton

October 30, 2016 | Women's Soccer

Laura Johns scores second half goal for Minutewomen but rally falls short.

DAYTON, Ohio - Thanks to a hat trick by Alexis Kiehl, Dayton defeated the UMass women's soccer team 3-1 on Sunday afternoon at Baujan Field. The Minutewomen mounted a second half comeback attempt thanks to a goal from Laura Johns, but the Kiehl scored a late insurance goal to secure the win.

The loss ends UMass' 2016 season with a 3-11-3 overall record and a 1-7-2 mark in the Atlantic 10. The Flyers improved to 6-9-3 overall and 4-4-2 in league play.

The Flyers jumped out to an early lead as Kiehl notched her first goal of the match in the 2nd minute of play. She put Dayton ahead 2-0 in the 36th minute with her second strike of the day.

In the second half, Johns scored in the 57th minute after a nice centering pass from Erin Doster. Kiehl, however, scored again in the 81st minute to push the cushion back to 3-1 with her 15th goal of the season.

UMass had a pair of corner kicks in the first 20 minutes of play and again in the 43rd minute, but were unable to convert. After Johns goal, the Minutewomen had three more shot attempts, but all were wide of target.

For the match, Dayton held a 17-to-6 advantage in shots and a 4-to-3 edge in corner kicks. UMass keeper Cassidy Babin made two saves in goal, while her counterpart Kaelyn Johns made one for the Flyers.
