AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts Director of Athletics Ryan Bamford announced a five-year contract extension for four-time Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year Angela McMahon, leader of the Minutewomen lacrosse program, on Friday.

"Angela McMahon is a proven mentor who continues to build upon the rich history of women's lacrosse at the University of Massachusetts," Director of Athletics Ryan Bamford said. "This extension shows our commitment to Angela and the good work she has done to lead our program to new heights. Angela is a first-class coach who promotes a world-class experience for our student-athletes and allows us to compete for championships every year. I am very happy we are able to recognize Angela's accomplishments and give her and our program security for the foreseeable future."

Over the last five seasons, McMahon has built the women's lacrosse program into one of the best in the nation. The Minutewomen have gone an impressive 91-12 which ranks as the second-most wins for any collegiate women's lacrosse program nationally in that span.

Those victories have brought home five consecutive Atlantic 10 titles along with five trips to the NCAA Tournament. In 2013 and 2015, McMahon guided the Minutewomen to first-round victories over UConn and Jacksonville, respectively, in the NCAA Tournament.

"I am thrilled and honored to solidify the next five years with such an amazing group of student-athletes, staff, and supportive administrators," McMahon said. "I am extremely grateful to Director of Athletics Ryan Bamford for his support and belief in our program which is so important as we continue building our program into one of the best in the nation. UMass provides a world-class experience for our student-athletes and it gives me great pride to continue playing a role in their lives going forward."

In her tenure, UMass student-athletes have been honored at the highest levels of collegiate women's lacrosse. Three players under McMahon have been named All-Americans, while 24 have earned all-region honors. A total of 38 have earned All-Atlantic 10 accolades including five A-10 Offensive Player of the Year selections, two Defensive Players of the Year, a Midfielder of the Year, a Rookie of the Year and a Student-Athlete of the Year. McMahon herself has been honored on four occasions by the league as Coach of the Year which is a league record.

The women's lacrosse program has been ranked among the nation's elite over the last five years with top-10 NCAA rankings in points, scoring offense, scoring defense and win percentage. UMass also finished three seasons with an RPI among the NCAA's top-10 programs in 2012, 2013 and 2014.

Entering the 2016 campaign, McMahon's program carries a 48-game win streak against Atlantic 10 opponents. That includes a 36-game win streak during regular-season play which is tied as the longest such streak in NCAA history. Overall, the Minutewomen have been nearly unbeatable at home winning 43 of its last 44 contests including a stretch of 31 consecutive which was the third longest streak in NCAA history.
