Men's Soccer Falls 1-0 At New Hampshire
September 19, 2015 | Men's Soccer
DURHAM, N.H. - A.J. Albers scored in the 55th minute giving the New Hampshire Wildcats a 1-0 win over the UMass men's soccer team on Saturday night at Bremner Field. The defensive match saw both teams battling for opportunities throughout both halves of play, but it was Albers tally that broke the deadlock for good.
UMass falls to 1-7-0 on the year and will close out non-conference play next weekend when Vermont visits Rudd Field on Friday, Sept. 25 before the Minutemen travel to Brown on Sunday, Sept. 27. New Hampshire remains unbeaten on the year at 5-0-1 overall.
Keeper Bardia Asefnia (Raleigh, N.C.) made four saves in goal for UMass, as did his counterpart Ryan Carpenter for the Wildcats.
For the match, UNH held a 17-to-9 shot advantage, thought the UMass defense held the Wildcats to mostly perimeter shooting. The Wildcats had five shots-on-goal compared to four for the Minutemen.
Albers goal was set up by an impressive cross from Fazal Nabi who controlled a long kick on a restart before carrying the ball deep down the left flank. He managed to turn the corner on a UMass defender gaining enough separation to send a cross into the box.
Albers set-up just inside the six-yard box where he was able to connect with Nabi's cross for the 1-0 lead at the 54:34 mark.
UMass managed five shots after the go-ahead goal with Carpenter making a pair of saves to protect the lead.
In the 67th minute, Asefnia made a big save to keep the game to just one goal after a cross to the back post found the head of Chris Wingate who re-directed a shot that looked to be earmarked for the back of the net inside the left post.
