Ott and Eipp Lead UMass Past Saint Joseph's

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Nine Minutewomen combined for 16 goals on only 33 shots, including hat tricks from Katie Ott and Erika Eipp, as UMass women's lacrosse defeated Saint Joseph's, 16-9 at Sweeney Field in Philadelphia, Pa., Friday evening. Eipp, who scored on each of her three shots, led the attack with a career-high-tying five points as she also registered a pair of assists during play against the Hawks.
Three additional Minutewomen tallied multi-point games as Hannah Murphy and Amy Tiernan provided two tallies with one assist apiece while Sarah Crowley scored twice. Callie Santos, Amber Tobin, Nicole Troost and Abby Walker notched one goal each while Holly Turner and Morgan Walker added their names to the scoring ledger with an assist apiece.
Massacushusetts improves to 13-1 (5-0 Atlantic 10) on the season while Saint Joseph's falls to 5-9 (0-6 A-10).
The Maroon and White defense limited Saint Joseph's to just 14 shots and a 16-of-21 conversion rate on clear attempts (76.2 percent) while the Minutewomen won the groundball battle, 19-15.
Massachusetts distanced itself from Saint Joseph's during the first half as the Minutewomen built an 11-3 advantage ahead of the break in play.
Murphy scored her first goal only 13 seconds into the contest after she won the initial draw and raced downfield. Crowley doubled the lead 35 seconds later following another Murphy draw control.
After Maggie Egan scored for the Hawks, the Minutewomen reeled off eight of the next nine goals to push the early lead to 10-2 with nine minutes, four seconds remaining in the first half.
Competition evened out during the second half as the Hawks added four goals to UMass' five.
After three-straight goals from Troost, Santos, and Eipp increased the lead to 14-3, Saint Joseph's Kelly Phelan notched one past Rachel Vallarelli to bring the score within 14-4. Eipp and Tobin each added another tally to round out the UMass scoring.
Saint Joseph's Sarah Smith would add two more and Kelly Phelan, her second of the night, as the Hawks fell at home 16-7.
The Minutewomen will finish off their three-game road trip Sunday when they face off against La Salle. Opening draw is scheduled for 11 a.m.
