UMass Extends Lead At Terrier Invitational Entering Final Day

Nov. 22, 2014

BOSTON - The Massachusetts women's swimming & diving team continued its excellent showing at the Terrier Invitational on Saturday, extending its lead to 178.5 points with one day of action remaining.

UMass placed at least two swimmers in the top three of all five individual races, including a sweep in the 100 Backstroke and a near sweep in the 100 Breaststroke.

After opening the finals with a runner-up finish by just .01 hundredths of a second in the 200 Medley Relay with a season top-time of 1:45.73, UMass began the process of distancing itself from the remaining four teams.

UMass placed four in the top six of the 400 Individual Medley, led by Meriza Werenski (4:21.00) and Jenna Diamond (4:27.56). Werenski's time was over eight seconds faster than her season-best - which was already first in the Atlantic 10 - and placed her in the top 40 nationally.

Cassie Sosnovich's 55.76 in the 100 Fly was a career best and vaulted her to the top spot in the league as well.

Zoe Judd's gold medal swim in the 100 Free moved her up four spots into the No. 1 position in the A-10 with a 1:50.74.

Katie Arnott led the Minutewomen assault in the 100 Breast with a conference-best 1:04.56, just ahead of Werenski at 1:04.64 and Mary Kate Cohen at 1:05.82. Cohen touched fourth, just six-hundredths out of third.

The 100 Back was where UMass made the biggest noise on Saturday, collecting all three podium positions and a pair of consolation finishes for 66 team points. Rebecca Quirie swam a 57.23 in the opening leg of the 400 Medley Relay on Friday night and lowered that time to 56.60 in Saturday's prelims before out-touching Judd in the finals with a 56.71. Judd's 57.08 was a hair ahead of Dasha Egkorova's 57.13.

UMass finished the night with a second place swim in the 800 Free Relay to end with 796 points. BU is second at 617.5, with Boston College at 516.5, Army at 422 and Fairfield at 84.

The meet will conclude on Sunday with prelims at 10 a.m., the 1650 Free at 2 p.m. and championship finals at 5 p.m.
