AMHERST, Mass. - Women's track and field jumper Stephanie Aguguo and women's lacrosse attack Jackie Lyons have been named UMass co-athletes of the week. This is the second week in a row that Stephanie Aguguo has been named an athlete of the week. Aguguo and Lyons will both be honored at the UMass Sports Luncheon on Wednesday. Speaking at the luncheon will be UMass Athletic Director John McCutcheon, who will be available for questions.
Aguguo (Shrewsbury, Mass.) won her second A-10 Champion title of the year in the triple jump. She beat her own school record in the triple jump with her leap of 41-03.75. This bested her previous mark by 5.25 inches, which she set last week at the UMass Pre-Conference Meet. This jump currently ranks her 27th in the NCAA East, which makes her a probable contender for NCAA Regionals on May 26-28.
Lyons (Rocky Point, N.Y.) sparked a second-half surge for the women's lacrosse team scoring all three of her goals and adding an assist as the Minutewomen pulled away from Canisius in the NCAA Play-In game on Saturday for a 16-8 win. She finished the game with five points on 3 goals and 2 assists increasing her school record to 225 career points. In the second half, she helped account for four of UMass' 10 goals. Lyons also had a draw control and four groundballs in the win which sealed UMass' berth into the NCAA Tournament.
Samantha Schnoerr (Norwalk, Conn.) was named the Atlantic 10 Rowing Student-Athlete of the Year on Monday as well as the UMass Female Scholar Athlete at the Senior Award's Banquet. The 2011 A-10 All-Conference First Team member holds a 3.945 grade point average as a Legal Studies major, and was the recipient of the Shep Shepard Award, which recognizes academic excellence in Legal Studies as well as contributions to the community.
Sean Busch (Stow, Mass.) was recently named the UMass Male Athlete of the Year at Monday's Senior Award's Banquet. The Stow, Mass. native was also honored as the Atlantic 10 Indoor Track and Field Student-Athlete of the Year earlier this season. Busch owns the indoor pole vault record (16-0.75) while standing in second place in the outdoor record book in the same event (15-9).
