AMHERST, Mass. - UMass senior defender Nazy Kerr was named the Atlantic 10 Defensive Player Of The Week on Tuesday as announced by the league office. Kerr led the UMass defense to an 18-4 win at Saint Joseph's capping the Minutewomen's first-ever undefeated conference season. UMass will head back to Philadelphia on Friday to face Duquesne in the Atlantic 10 Tournament Semifinals.
Kerr led all defensive players with two caused turnovers and three groundballs. It was her sixth multi-caused turnover game of the season and her seventh multi-groundball effort. The three groundballs tied her season-high. Kerr also anchored a defense which allowed just four goals against the Hawks marking the sixth time this season UMass has given up six-or-fewer goals in a game.
For the season, Kerr leads UMass in caused turnovers (21) and is one of the top players in groundballs (21). For her career, she now has 33 caused turnovers and 55 groundballs in 67 games played.
The native of Milton, Mass. earned the fifth defensive weekly honor of the season for the Minutewomen. Katie Florence (3/7) and Dayna Defliese (4/4) each earned the weekly accolade once this season, while Ali Houlis earned it back-to-back on April 11 and April 18.
UMass is the top-ranked defense in the league allowing 8.20 goals per game with that number dropping to 6.14 in seven league games.
The Minutewomen are in search of their third-straight Atlantic 10 Tournament title and fourth overall. The league champion will host the MAAC Champion in the NCAA Play-In Game during the May 7-8 weekend.
