AMHERST, Mass. - Brett Canepa scored the game-winning goal in the 85th minute of play as the UMass men's soccer team defeated the No. 19 Bradley Braves on Saturday afternoon at Rudd Field. Andrew Henshaw scored the opening goal of the game for the Minutemen, while keeper Shane Curran-Hays made seven saves in goal.
It marked the first win over a ranked opponent for UMass since defeating No. 10 Saint Louis 2-1 on Nov. 7, 2008 at Rudd Field.
The Minutemen improved to 2-8 overall and will host Charlotte and Saint Louis next weekend at Rudd Field to begin Atlantic 10 play. Bradley falls to 6-2-2 overall and will face New Hampshire on Monday.
UMass jumped on the scoreboard just before halftime as Andrew Henshaw bent a 30-yard shot by Bradley keeper Brian Billings (3 saves) in the 39th minute.
The two teams remained scoreless until the 74th minute when Bradley's Christian Meza scored his third goal of the season to tie the game with a header from the right flank.
Canepa's second career goal proved the game-winner in the 85th minute. After David Key fired a shot which was saved by Billings, Canepa put home the rebound for the 2-1 lead.
Bradley had two scoring opportunities in the final four minutes of play, but Curran-Hays made saves on both shots to preserve the win.
The Braves held a 19-to-16 advantage in shots including 13 in the second half. UMass controlled play in the first half with a 10-to-6 edge in shots and a 5-1 advantage in corners. Bradley reversed the stats in the second half outshooting UMass 13-to-6, while earning 8 corners to just one.
